What are the most common Product Manager Interview Questions?
-
Focus: Your past experiences, personality, work style, and how you handle various situations.
Examples:
Tell me about a time you failed.
Describe a situation where you had a conflict with a coworker.
What are your strengths and weaknesses?
Why are you interested in product management
Preparation: Reflect on your past experiences, identify stories that showcase your skills (leadership, problem-solving, communication, etc.), and practice articulating them using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Think about both the content and the storytelling. STAR is a good start, but you need to build in drama too.
Not sure how to do that? Book a session and let's talk.
-
Focus: Your ability to understand user needs, analyze market opportunities, and design innovative products.
Examples:
How would you improve your favorite app?
Design a product for blind people to navigate a shopping mall.
What is the biggest problem Uber faces, and how would you solve it?
Preparation: Familiarize yourself with popular product design frameworks (CIRCLES method), practice brainstorming solutions to common product challenges, and research the products and companies you're interviewing with.
-
Focus: Your ability to define goals, set metrics, make data-driven decisions, and execute product strategies effectively.
Examples:
How would you measure the success of Facebook Marketplace?
You're the PM for Instagram Stories - what metrics would you track
You see a 10% drop in user engagement - what do you do?
Preparation: Understand common product metrics (DAU, MAU, retention, engagement), practice analyzing data to identify trends and insights, and develop a framework for approaching product execution scenarios.
-
Focus: Your ability to think strategically about product roadmaps, market trends, competitive landscapes, and long-term product vision.
Examples:
Should Facebook get into the education space?
What is Google's biggest opportunity in the next 5 years?
How would you launch a new product in a developing country?
Preparation: Research industry trends and competitive landscapes, analyze successful product strategies, and develop frameworks for evaluating market opportunities and strategic decision-making.
-
Focus: Your ability to think quantitatively and make reasonable estimations using limited information.
Examples:
How many piano tuners are there in Chicago?
Estimate the market size for self-driving cars in India.
How much storage does YouTube use daily?
Preparation: Practice breaking down complex problems into smaller components, making reasonable assumptions, and using back-of-the-envelope calculations to arrive at estimates.

While these question types are common, the specific questions and emphasis may vary depending on the company, role, and interviewer. Large tech companies often have structured interview processes with specific question formats, while smaller companies may have more flexible and conversational interviews.
